Real Skate covered the first TBMS fundraiser in 1999,
an amateur contest held in a Scotts Valley parking lot just up the
hill from the city of Santa Cruz. Since then Sessions and the Advocates
of the skatepark have done a remarkable job raising funds with contests,
skate jams, video jams, selling logo bricks, and with the help of
the Nike eBay shoe donation, they are almost there!
The skatepark is no longer a figment of our imagination,
it actually has been designed for 20K sq. ft., a location approved,
and went up to bid this week. The bid will be formally awarded on
March 3rd at the Scotts Valley City Council meeting.
OK, here's the inside scoop. The lowest bidder is satisfactory,
however, comes in slightly more than the cash already in the pot
by about $50K. So we all need to help kick in that amount of cash
or pledges, and SOON.
The other issue is there is a midnight hour (i.e. "last
minute" for those of you who don't know who Wilson Pickett
is) opposition to the skatepark. Those opposing are petitioning
the City Council to reduce the size of the current skatepark plan
from 20k sq. ft. to half that size.
Here's how you can help:
Call to Support: The Advocates
are asking Scotts Valley parents and skaters to call the voice mail
of the SV City Council members who are opposed to the park and tell
them you are in support of a 20K park as planned. If you call, of
course be super nice, professional, and don't give them any reason
to think skaters or skatepark supporters are not worthy. And please
don't forget to thank them for their help thus far for this skatepark
that will be so important to us. Tell them we would be greatful
to have a functional size skatepark and honored to have it in Tim's
name. You know the drill!
